Our History

1978 – Started as a bilingual fellowship under the spiritual oversight of the late Rev. Ang Hoe Peng, a retired Methodist from Malaysia

1982 – Time had come for the Fellowship to be constituted as a church. It was formally registered as Evangelical Chinese Church Melbourne(ECCM), thereby purchased 642-644 Elgar Rd, Box Hill to reach out to migrants and refugees.

1984 – English service started at Box Hill. In 1994, English service moved into our second property at 19-23 Holland Rd, Blackburn.

2004- Because of the complexity of a growing congregation of Mandarin, Cantonese and English, the English congregation formally registered as Evangelical Community Church Incorporated (ECCI). In 2010, ECCI purchased Court Street in Box Hill as an extension of ECCI ministry. ECCI continues to have a Mandarin congregation worshipping every Sunday side by side with the English congregation.

In 1978, Evangelical Chinese Church Melbourne(ECCM) started in Box Hill at St Andrews Uniting Church which is located a short ten-minute walk from ECCI in Court Street in 1978. It is greatly significant that one of ECCM’s daughter churches, ECCI, with a number of its members who were founding members of ECCM, is able to have a permanent home at 12-16 Court St, Box Hill, which is close to its birthplace and thus able to fulfill and continue the vision of ECCM when it was first founded. As we started in Box Hill so have we now returned to Box Hill thirty-one years later. This is more providential than co-incidental.
